Councillor Jill Long rounded off her Christmas duties with a visit to the Wednesday Community Group, at the United Reform Church, in High Street.

She joined about 20 people for the special three-course lunch packed with soup, a turkey and ham main course with all the trimmings and trifle to top it all off with.

“It was good fun,” the mayor said. “It was just really lovely.

“The day felt very relaxed and is something that they have been really excited about having. I had a marvellous time with everyone – and the food was wonderful.”

The group meets every other Wednesday at the church, from 1.30pm, to play bingo.

There’s no membership fee and people are welcome to join the fun. David Jones founded the group. He said: “It’s just a nice way to socialise.”

The next meeting is on Wednesday, January 7.
