Guns and jewellery stolen in Rye burglaries

Police are appealing for witnesses following three burglaries in Rye on Thursday afternoon (May 12).

Two of the burglaries took place in Udimore Road, while the third happened in Cooper Road, all between noon and 4pm.

Various items were stolen from the addresses including a men’s Rolex watch with a silver bracelet and blue face, a pair of men’s Hugo Boss blue jeans, several pairs of cufflinks including a gold aeroplane pair, and a gold baby bracelet with orange beads.

A Browning 525 shotgun and a Lanber Sporter shotgun were also stolen from one of the Udimore Road addresses.

Both have since been recovered.

The thief entered all the premises via the back door, smashing the glass in two of the doors

Detective Constable Alex Campbell from the East Sussex Priority Crime Team said: “I would like to hear from anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the Rye area on that Thursday, and in particular anyone who was in Udimore Road between 2pm and 3pm, and who may have a dashboard camera in their vehicle.

“It is a particularly busy road and many people have cameras in their vehicles nowadays.

“These may have caught something of interest for this investigation and if so I would be grateful to hear from you.

“We also remind people to report anything suspicious to police, and to keep an eye out for the stolen property in this case.”

A 56-year old man was arrested on Sunday (May 15) near Staines in Surrey on suspicion of burglary and unlawful possession of the shotguns which were recovered.

He has been released on police bail until May 25 while enquiries continue.
