Gym fixes it for youngsters

Agile children received recognition at the final session of a Felpham gymnastics group.

The seven and eight-year-olds were presented with the proficiency award of the British Gymnastics Association in recognition of their skills.

Ryan Thompson, Holly Lewis, Ferne Latham and Ben Hardcastle have regularly attended the junior gym section of the Gym Joey group for many years.

Ferne and Ben had been going since they were toddlers, while Holly and Ryan first went along to the St Mary's Centre sessions when they were aged around three.

Club coach Judy Pescod said they had worked hard during the 45-minute sessions to be able to complete manoeuvres such as forward and backward rolls, cartwheels, handstands and headstands. Beams and high bars are among the equipment used.

'Our aim is to improve the children's agility, balance and co-ordination,' she explained. 'Coming to the sessions is very good for them to mix with other children, gives them confidence and keeps them fit while having fun.'

A total of ten children attended the Thursday afternoon sessions at St Mary's Centre. Judy has run them for ten years at the building and 16 years in all.

Summer holiday sessions will be staged by her at the centre for the five Thursdays during August.
