SUMMER CONCERT: Hailsham Choral present a summer concert featuring Love Stories told in song from 16th to 20th century in the Civic Community Hall, Vicarage Lane at 3pm on Sunday. Tickets are £10 and £5 for under 16s either on the door or from the Camera Centre in the High Street in advance.

SCALEXTRIC BRIDGE RACING: Tomorrow, Saturday, Dads have an opportunity to spend special time with their children. Have a great evening speeding along the Scalextric tracks with your over 7 year old children at Emmanuel Church Hall, Hawkswood Road from 7pm. £1. Refreshments.

BATTLE OF THE SOMME: Hailsham and District Branch Royal British Legion are holding a parade and service on the Sunday July 10 to mark the Battle of the Somme in which so many gave their lives and others severely injured. The parade starts at 10.30am in the Charles Hunt Centre Age UK car park going to the Hailsham War Memorial in the High Street via Vicarage Lane for the service at 10.45am. All organisations and members of the public are invited to attend. The Hailsham Club will be open for refreshments before and after the parade service.

SUMMER FAYRE: On Sunday the Cats Protection and Adoption Centre at 63 Marshfoot Lane has its Summer Fayre from noon to 3pm. The event will include a Grand Raffle. Entry is 50p or a donation of cat food.

HEALTHY LIVING CLUB: This club meets at the Methodist Church, High Street. On Tuesday members will be enjoying Boccia from 10am to 11am and yoga from 11am to noon. Get there early as spaces are limited.

CAN’T COOK, WON’T COOK?: Learn the basics at this free basic cookery skills taster session from 12.30pm to 2.30pm at Hailsham East Community Centre on Tuesday. Bookings and info 07795 231064.

JOIN HAILSHAM LIONS: Thinking of joining. New members will be most welcome at their monthly meeting on Tuesday at the Charles Hunt Centre. Start 7.30pm. Phone 0845 833 9828 (local).

MOTIVATE YOURSELF: There is a workshop at the Old Chapel on Thursday, 2pm to 4pm which includes self-reflection (knowing yourself), you have the power, having courage, the importance of individuality, forgiving yourself (dealing with guilt), making things happen and living your dream. This is a free course and is being offered in partnership with Sussex Downs College. CALLING COMMUNITY GROUPS: The Community Groups Forum meets on Thursday at 6.30pm in St Mary’s Church lounge. For local groups and organisations to discuss and share news and views. Just turn up.

HMI OPEN DAY: The Family Friendly Hailsham Memorial Institute will be open for people to come and have a look around, ask questions, meet members and enjoy good company between 11am and 11.30pm next Friday, July 8. There’s a free pint of Fosters or 250ml glass of wine for anyone who takes out membership on the day.

FARMERS MARKET: Next Saturday, July 9, the Farmers Produce and Craft Market is open from 9am to 12.30pm at the Cattle Market site, Market Street. Fresh, local, traceable produce. Free onsite parking and Market Café.

BOOT SALE: On the Cattle Market site, set up from 7.30am on Saturday July 9. Pitch £5. Domestic sellers only. Charities free. No traders or food vans. Entry 20p to local charity. Also Demelza charity will have a stall there as well as the Hailsham over 50s Health Living club. Please come along and support these worthy causes. No booking necessary. Enquiries 07887 910150.

INDIA GALLERY: The Hailsham Old Pavilion Society (HOPS) launch evening for India Gallery, held at The Royal Indian Restaurant, last week raised nearly £300 for The Pavilion. Restaurant owner, Viv Samuel, welcomed guests to The Royal Indian Restaurant and supplied lots of tasty Indian nibbles. Visitors were able to view the stunning, colourful and evocative images taken by Roy and Alison Morris on their trips to India. The canvasses will remain on display at the restaurant. Thanks go to Viv, Roy and Alison for their generosity in supporting The Pavilion, our local cinema and live arts venue.

HISTORY SOCIETY: There are no meetings of the Historical and Natural History Society for July and August, but a trip is planned in July for members to visit the Court House Museum at Pevensey. The next meeting is on September 14 at the Methodist Church Hall, High Street, at 7pm for 7.30pm start and will be an audio-visual presentation (from Seaford Photographic Society) by Colin Bell. All are most welcome, visitors at £2.50.

At the June meeting, members and visitors had a very good and informative talk on The Life and Times of Edith Cavell (executed by the Germans during WWI), by Melanie Gibson-Barton, who had researched Edith Cavell’s life in great depth. Edith was born in 1865 at Swardeston, a happy-go-lucky child, her father being the local Vicar. When she started being educated at boarding school, her happiness with life dipped. After her schooling, Edith moved to Belgium for work. About 1896, she started training to be a nurse at the Royal London Hospital, under Matron Eva Luckes, a friend of Florence Nightingale. After she finished her training, Edith went to Brussels, as a matron. When the First World War broke out, she was with her mother in Norfolk, but later returned to Brussels, nursing. She then began sheltering British soldiers, and helped them to escape to the Netherlands. She helped about 200 servicemen to get out of the country. Edith was arrested by German troops in 1915, and was found guilty of treason, and sentenced to be executed by firing squad on the 12 October 1915. Her death provoked outrage, and doubled the number of men joining the British Army to 10,000 per week. The Cavell Nurses Trust was set up in 1917 called Nurse Aid following the public outcry after her death. The Trust still operates to this day, assisting nurses and others in need. A really interesting true story about a very remarkable woman, to whom David Bourne, Chairman of the Society, admits he has not done full justice in this short report. HERITAGE MUSEUM: The museum at Blackman’s Yard (behind the Kemer Kebab shop), Market Street, is open during the summer, Friday and Saturday mornings between 10am and 12.30pm. Admission to the museum is free.

MARSHLANDS SCHOOL: Thanks to all the helpers and supporters of Marshlands School stall at the children’s market last Saturday. The tuck shop and hoopla raised an amazing £75.66. Thanks also to Hailsham Town Council for putting on the event that made it possible.

HAILSHAM FM RADIO: Great news. From tomorrow, Saturday, Hailsham FM online community radio station will be broadcasting, in addition to its weekends on Monday evenings through Thursday from 7pm to 11pm and Friday 7pm through to Sunday 11pm. Details of how you can contact the radio station and tune in are available on their website at www.hailshamfm.co.uk. In case you are not already aware, Hailsham FM broadcasts online every weekend via their website and on your mobile and tablet via the TuneIn app (available via your device’s app store) while preparing for the launch of a full-time service on FM, which will be in place prior to April 2018. Wake up with their breakfast show from 7am, listen to interviews with people from the local area throughout the day and prepare for your weekend with regular travel and weather updates. The Hailsham Takeover is a chance for you to have a try at broadcasting over the weekend.
