HOLIDAY CLUB: The half term is fast approaching and bookings are now available at Freedom Leisure. COMPUTERS FOR CHARITIES: Thanks to Chandlers BMW Brighton for their support CfCs motorbike is now back on the road and ready for the run. CfC will now be raising money for Deaf Awareness week and essential organisations like the East Sussex Hearing Resource Centre who again have had funding slashed. Eleven million people across the UK suffer from deafness and hearing impairment including bikers. Help CfC to help them by sponsoring this event. To sponsor either online via Computers for Charities website www.computersforcharities.org, cheque or BACS are welcome. If you can please gift aid, it does help. Why not guess the final distance, time either for the whole or part. Simon will be driving from Sussex to leave Land’s End at midnight on May 11 then driving 867 miles John O’Groats non-stop and back to Sussex. A total of 2000 miles or 3200Km possibly in 24 hours?

RAMBLERS: On Wednesday there is a short guided walk Bexhill Old Town. Cost £4 per person (all monies go to Bexhill Museum). The walk leader is Nobby 440624. There is also a longer walk on Wednesday taking the Seven Sisters Country Park circular. There are four stiles plus a low wall and two uphill sections. The walk is 5 miles. Tel: 325819 for details.

PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY: After a very successful season the society’s last lecture on April 21, was given by club members Pat Broad ARPS, AFIAP, and Hugh Milsom FRPS, MFIAP; both accomplished photographers. Such a variety of prints were enjoyed from colour landscape to monochrome and infrared. Each print created a different mood showing a sympathy with the landscape and their interpretation of light and colour. An enjoyable evening. To end the season the club held their AGM. After six years as a remarkable and very hard working chairman, Ray Beckwith retired from this post. The club has gone from strength to strength under his leadership and his wit and repertoire will be missed. A new committee was elected with a number continuing to stay in their posts ensuring the club continues to flourish.

CHILDREN’S MARKET: Hailsham’s Children’s Market will take place in the town centre on Saturday June 25 from 9.30am to 4pm.

MENTAL HEALTH BARBECUE: The old Chapel will be holding a fair and barbecue on Wednesday between 10am and 4pm to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week. Everyone is welcome. Price of barbecue is £2.50. For more information contact 01323 849524.

U3A: At their May AGM meeting on Tuesday 24 John Kenton page will give a presentation about the work of Eastbourne First Responders. Tea at 2 for 2.30 start. At the Discussion Group in April members revealed all the things that they had successfully cleared out and disposed of since the discussion on Hoarding last month. The discussion for this day was on Healthy Eating and Healthy Exercise. The general feeling was that it should be everything in moderation when it comes to a balance between healthy eating and exercise, but still enjoying life. It was suggested there should be more cookery lessons in schools, so that children have a basic idea of how to cook from scratch. More local sports facilities should be provided in schools and by local authorities, so that young people (and older) can get exercise by participating. For the May meeting discussion will be on gardening and the benefit of outside activities. What is this obsession with our gardens? The English seem to spend much time, and loads of money on their gardens. Is it just that the fresh air is good for us, is it because we like to look at it when it is finished, but is it ever finished? Or is it to just get out of the house? Lots to discuss about gardening and its benefits. On May 19 there is a debate on the EU Referendum, together with Eastbourne and Wealden U3A group.

CHARITY GOLF: On Friday May 27, Hailsham Lions are holding their annual charity golf day at Wellshurst Golf Club, Hellingly. First tee off 10.30am. WYVALES CHARITY EVENT: Hailsham Lions will be joining in the local Wyvale Garden Centre’s charity weekend on May 21 and 22, where they will be serving their much-loved candy floss, alongside their ever popular book stall and tombola. Hailsham FM will be providing musical entertainment throughout.

FLOWER CLUB: On Wednesday at 7.30pm Civic Community Hall, Vicarage Lane, Hailsham Flower Club hosts a demonstration by Angie Hyde entitled Over the Rainbow. Visitors welcome at £5. Membership fees are only £28 per year.

COMMEMORATIVE STONE: A commemorative stone is to be unveiled in Hailsham to honour the memory of Victoria Cross recipient, Company Sergeant Major Nelson Victor Carter. Marking the 100th anniversary of Nelson Carter’s act of gallantry that earned him the prestigious award during the early years of the First World War, a special ceremony will take place at the war memorial in Hailsham High Street mid-afternoon on Saturday July 2, where the commemorative stone will be unveiled to the public.

ARTS FESTIVAL: It’s time to leap into action if you would like to be involved in the 10th annual Hailsham Festival of Arts and Culture. The festival dates will be September 8 to 18. Visit the website where you will find forms for the Art Trail and Event proposals. Deadlines are May 18 for event proposals, June 1 to register for the Art Trail, June 14 for booking advertising space. There will be an event on May 18 where everyone interested in participating in the festival can get together to discuss ideas, plans and publicity, full details will follow shortly but make a note of the date in your diary now.
