Justine Fraser, from the school, said: “Many families at Sandown have been affected by cancer and we all know how difficult life can be when we are supporting a loved one through any illness.

“Ronald McDonald House Charities provides somewhere for families to be close to their loved ones while they are going through treatment.

“The Royal Marsden is the world’s first hospital dedicated to cancer diagnosis, treatment, research and education.

“Several Sandown families have made use of these facilities.

“Our Head teacher, Charlie Lindsay, decided that he was going to grow a beard (for the first time in his life) to raise some money. Our aim was to raise £1,000 to help make life easier for others at the hardest of times.

“He was so impressed with the generous donations from our community that he also offered to shave off his beloved hair.

“He agreed that if the target was met before Friday 1st December then he would have it shaved off in our Funky Friday assembly in front of 538 pupils, staff and parents/carers.

“Sandown exceeded this target and together we raised a whooping £2119.06.

“This is an amazing amount of money and was raised through kind donations, mufti days, bake sales and just giving pages. As a School we are blown away by the generosity of our community, we are so, so proud.”
