Hammer attack victim died of natural causes

A LITTLEHAMPTON man who collapsed six weeks after he was attacked with a hammer died from natural causes, a post-mortem examination has revealed.

On May 27, John Stevens, 37, of Boxgrove House, Wick, was attacked on a driveway in Beach Road, Littlehampton, but suffered only minor injuries.

Six weeks later he collapsed at his home and was rushed to Worthing Hospital's intensive care unit where doctors took the decision to switch off his life-support.

Police initially believed that the two incidents may have been linked but were treating Mr Stevens' death as unexplained and not as murder as he had a history of ill-health.

A man and a woman, both known to Mr Stevens, were arrested shortly after the initial attack and are on police bail.
