Harbour diver may be prosecuted

A harbour authority is considering bringing a private prosecution against a man who was hurt after diving into just 2ft of water.

A 22-year-old Newhaven man, who has not been named, was rushed to hospital yesterday (Sunday) morning after he was seen floating unconscious in the water.

It is thought he jumped from the closed pier.

He was released from the Royal Sussex County Hospital later that day.

Now Newhaven Port and Properties is considering bringing a private prosecution against the man for breaking its by-laws if it can prove he jumped from the harbour arm.

Harbour master Doug Nye said: 'We are undertaking an investigation ourselves with a view to prosecution because the act infringes our harbour bylaws.'

Police and coastguards warned about the dangers of jumping into water from a height, known as 'tombstoning', several weeks ago after youngsters were spotted on the harbour arm.
