Hastings anti war campaigners oppose Trident renewal

Hastings Against War (HAW) will lobby Amber Rudd MP after gathering public opinions at a stall in the town centre on Saturday, February 6.

The group believes the £100billion needed to renew Trident would be better spent on schools and hospitals.

HAW spokesman Rona Drenna said: “The cost of replacing Trident is around £100 billion — and spiralling.

“The latest estimates suggest the cost may be as much as £165 billion.

“That money could fully fund A&E services for at least 40 years; employ 150,000 new nurses; build one and a half million affordable new homes and build 30,000 new primary schools, or cover tuition fees for four million students.

“We say money spent on replacing nuclear weapons cannot be justified and it makes no sense while schools and hospitals are suffering; it must be spent on services that people need.”

Ms Drennan recently met with Hastings & District Trades Union Council to discuss conversion from building submarines and nuclear bombs to marine technology creating wind and tidal power schemes.

The discussion was open without underestimating the challenges, but looking at real possibilities in line with a trade union framework Just Transitions endorsed by the International Labour Organisation and with the UK Trades Union Council in its statement, A Fair and Green Future for All.

HAW is completely opposed to all nuclear weapons based on the human catastrophe after atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

The group will will be in the Wellington Way pedestrian area from 11am to 3pm.

Supporters are welcome to join HAW at the national demonstration against Trident in London on Saturday, February 27.

To go with the group, meet at Hastings Railway Station at 9am.
