Hastings charity dismayed at losing Asda donation box

The Cat Call collection point had stood in the St Leonards branch of Asda for two years.

But last week Asda removed all charity collection boxes from all of its UK stores following a change of policy, prompting outcry from animal charities, foodbanks and shoppers alike.

Asda told Cat Call a box for donated cat food, as well as a collecting box for cash contributions, would have to be removed.

Cat Call trustee Lorraine Shackel said: “We were disappointed.

“It is not a local decision and we had a good relationship with the community girl there and she felt bad having to tell us.”

The bin provided 85 per cent of the charity’s cat food, which is distributed to people who temporarily provide a home for strays but may not be able to afford to feed them.

Lorraine added: “It’s had quite an effect on us.”

However the charity is currently in talks with Asda to allow them to hold a series of collections in the store.

An Asda spokesperson said: “Asda plays an important role in the communities we serve. We know we can make a huge difference to local charities, and our customers and colleagues are generous when it comes to supporting their local communities, which is why we try to make sure we host a variety of good causes in our stores.

“We’ve recently reviewed the Asda Community programme and are investing an extra £2m into local good causes through the Asda Foundation. We’re also introducing some new processes and guidelines to make it fair and consistent for all the great charities we support and to enable our Community Champions to make the best use of their time.

“Collections are very welcome if volunteers are on hand to explain to customers where their donations are going, which we also know can increase the amount of donations given.”

Cat Call also has a donation box at ESK and volunteers will be collecting in person in the store on Saturday (February 27) from noon.
