Hastings council: Park cycle path '˜will be safe'

Many are worried about children and dog walkers when the shared cycle path is in operation.

Leisure, environment and amenities lead member Warren Davies said the similar seafront cycle path has had no accidents and believes the park route will be just as safe.

“We have wanted a safe cycle route through Alexandra Park for some time, and we believe that the scheme we unanimously agreed at cabinet will provide this,” he said.

“Indeed, the busiest part of the seafront cycle route, between Robertson Street and the Old Town, is a shared route, and there have been no reported accidents since it opened some years ago.

“We do want the cycle path to be a success, so the proposal being implemented builds on the consultation responses, and we will do all we can to ensure that all users of Alexandra Park, current and new, can enjoy it and get the most from this true jewel in our town.

“We have agreed to review the operation of the cycle route through the park after six months, and will regularly update all park users on the project.”

The council’s cabinet approved East Sussex County Council’s plan for a shared path through the park on Monday, January 4.

One concerned resident claimed the council did not consider one of two petitions made against the proposal.

But Cllr Davies refutes that claim and said safety is a ‘real concern’ for the developers.

“Alexandra Park is a very precious asset for our town, built by the Victorians and recently restored to its full glory, and we are keen to ensure that it is properly protected, but still meets the changing demands put upon it,” he said.

“The agreed recommendations were a direct response to the consultation process.

“With safety a real concern the route has been changed with a clear commitment to more signage and appropriate enforcement measures.

“The papers did refer to the petition, and to the considerable public interest in the scheme; indeed, that was clear from the packed public gallery at the cabinet meeting, many of whom had been personally consulted with.”
