Hastings Week honour for Ion

The Bowskill Trophy is presented annually in memory of Cyril Bowskill who, with his wife Joan was a great supporter of Hastings Week.

It is awarded, from majority vote based on public nominations, to the person, group or organisation who has done most to promote the prestige of the annual event.

Ion Castro is vice chair of the Hastings Week Committee and the trophy was for his ongoing contribution to the week particularly in the production of the Hastings Week Programme.

It was presented, at Hastings Town Hall, by Hastings Mayor, Cllr Bruce Dowling and Hastings Week Chair Nigel Hogben.

A Certificate of merit was awarded to Hastings and St.Leonards Veterans Association for their continued support for Hastings Week.

Traders in High Street and George Street dress their windows during Hastings Week to compete for the Pam Brown and Ray Goode trophies .

The Mayor accepted the trophies on behalf of House of Habibi 38 High Street and Seagate 58 High Street. Balfour & Byron 32A High Street received a ‘Highly commended’ certificate.

Each year primary schools in the Hastings area compete for the schools painting competition organised by Jean Hobson and Eve Martin with Mandy Ashenden from Tesco’s, who sponsor the event.

This year it was won by Churchwood Primary Academy with their interpretation of Hastings Pier and was accepted, for the school, by Chair of Governors, Alan Roberts.

Hastings Week is actually more than a week of events, including as it does both weekends either side of October 14, the anniversary of the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and has grown from the single Hastings Day celebrated on October 14.

Plans are already well underway for this year’s Hastings Week event, which will be more high profile than ever as it coincides with the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings.

The highlight of the week for many is Hastings Bonfire Night, with its spectacular torch-lit procession, fireworks display and huge bonfire on the beach.

This year’s bonfire takes place on Saturday October 15.
