HISTORY SOCIETY: As a taster before their visit to Chartwell in July, the Heathfield and District History Society members enjoyed a talk by Mrs H Woodward of the National Trust entitled Sir Winston Churchill and Chartwell. Mrs Woodward cleverly linked the life and career of one of Britain’s greatest Prime Ministers with his obsession with Chartwell. Although his wife Clementine had great doubts about the dark and isolated house Winston could see its potential and at considerable expense created a beautiful home in which to bring up his family. An enigmatic man, praised and vilified in equal measure, he gradually matured into a successful soldier and statesman. After the 1930’s, described as his ‘wilderness years’, Churchill became the leader Britain needed in the 1940’s when, as the American broadcaster Ed. Murrow said ‘He mobilised the English language and sent it into war’. His was a long and varied life and one which a grateful nation honoured with a state funeral.

Next month’s meeting will be the AGM after which the members will get a chance to see a DVD of Heathfield Park from 1973 to 1993 when it was the property of Dr Gerald Moore and boasted a motor museum and a wild life park. The AGM will take place at The Community Centre on Thursday March 16 at 7.30pm. Visitors are welcome to join us.
