FINE ARTS SOCIETY: Wealden Decorative and Fine Arts Society's first meeting after the summer break took place in temperatures more like high summer than early September. Our lecturer, Shirley Smith, coped admirably with the heat and delivered a fascinating talk on Sandro Botticelli. Using a few selected images of his work she not only described what we were looking at but also placed it in the context of Florentine life under the extravagant Medicis and later under the reformer Savonarola.

HEATHFIELD CHORAL SOCIETY: September sees Heathfield Choral Society’s return for a new season. We have an exciting programme for the year, which includes an invitation to repeat our rendition of Howard Goodall’s Every Purpose Under the Heaven at East Hoathly Church tomorrow, Saturday, as part of their annual weekend of music; a visit by some members to New York to sing Eternal Light in November at the Carnegie Hall by special invitation of the composer Howard Goodall; and culminating in December with our Christmas concert when we will perform Wenceslas by Bob Chilcott and the Christmas Cantata by Geoffrey Bush. In the spring term we will be rehearsing Haydn’s Creation in preparation for our May Concert, after which we will be hosting our French friends from the choirs of Forges les Eaux in a weekend of singing and feasting. Later in the year the ever popular Handel’s Messiah will once again be part of our Christmas concert. We are a friendly and welcoming community choir, so if you would like to try singing with us then please contact our membership secretary, membership@heathfieldchoral.org.uk. We rehearse on Monday evenings from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in the Union Church in Station Road. There are no auditions, and although the ability to read music would help, it’s not essential. We are particularly keen to recruit tenors and basses. For further information have a look at our website: www.heathfieldchoral.org.uk
