Hedgehog says goodbye at carnival's last Christmas Fun Day

But this year will be the furry mascot’s final outing representing the association as it is their last-ever event.

Frieda Hughes, 72, from East Street is president of the Littlehampton Carnival Association and will be retiring after the event, which will be held on Saturday, December 10.

The festivities will begin when the Mayor of Littlehampton Ian Buckland opens the fun day at 10am in Littlehampton High Street.

Frieda said: “I’m quite sad to be stepping down, but after 42 years of organising the carnival it’s about time.

“I’ve been very fortunate, as all the entertainers have given us their time free of charge. It’s the spirit of Christmas.”

For £3, children can visit Santa in his grotto and will get a present and ‘reindeer dust’ (also known as oats and glitter to adults).

There will be performances from Celebration Samba, pom-pom troupes and the Sussex Steel Band, and Dillistones Charity Organ will be playing Christmas songs.

After the event, Hampton will be adopted by the Edwin James Festival Choir, who are also performing.

Frieda said: “He is eight feet tall, so he can scare the little children at first, but they love him really. The more mischevious he is, the more the children like him.”
