SCALEXTRIC RACING: Tomorrow, Saturday, Dads have an opportunity to spend special time with their children. Have a great evening speeding along the Scalextric tracks with your over 7 year old children at Emmanuel Church Hall, Hawkswood Road from 7pm. £1. Refreshments.

SONGS OF PRAISE: In addition to the usual Sunday service there will be, at 5.45pm, a Patronal Festival at Hellingly Church.

AMERICAN FOOTBALL: With a difference. This is Flag American non-contact football. If you are aged 8 to 17 years and would like to give it a try, go along on Wednesday between 6.30pm and 7.30pm to Horsebridge Rec. It costs just £4 a session and tournaments start in September.

DICKER DAY: What a wonderful affair. The sun shone and everybody enjoyed the fun of a traditional village fair with a 50s twist (sorry, theme). I just wanted to pass on my own thanks for a lovely day and for resurrecting this event after a 10 year absence. Congratulations to the Dicker Day team. Although it started off a slowly the day progressed to become a fabulous affair and was a great success. The dog show was great fun, the traditional races were also quite a giggle particularly the sack race when the boys desperately hurled themselves over the finish line ending up in a bundle. The Tug o’ War was a really fun and atmospheric way to bring adjacent villages (Arlington and The Dickers) together. The live music band was foot-tappingly contagious (who needs Glastonbury) and the lasses who dressed for the occasion in their vintage dresses and hairstyles looked gorgeous. All the happy smiley stallholders and organisers in front and behind the scenes must be very proud and I for one hope organisers will consider doing it all over again next year.

COFFEE MORNINGS: Also an opportunity to exchange books at the Dicker Hall between 10.40am and noon on Thursday mornings. Book exchange or purchase 20p.

CONSULTATION: The opportunity to get involved ends July 29. East Sussex County Council is started a consultation on the draft Countryside Access Strategy in May. This is a proposed plan that looks at how ESCC manage public rights of way and countryside sites in the future. You can read the full Countryside Access Strategy on their website at www.eastsussex.gov.uk/shapingthefuture. You can take part in the survey, which runs until July 29. The survey is open to everyone, from individuals and user groups to landowners and partners. It should take around 15 minutes to complete.
