Helping Littlehampton firms to keep staff safe and sound

ALMOST 1,500 people have been hurt in fires at work in the last four years, a trend a Littlehampton charity is attempting to buck.

St John Ambulance’s Linden Park base is offering fire marshal training courses to businesses in the area, after figures revealed 1,425 people were injured in fires at work in the UK in the last four years, with 32 fire-related workplace deaths over the same period.

Chris Huelin, who manages the courses, said: “Injuries relating to fires will range from burns to sprains, and strains and breaks sustained as people evacuate buildings.

“It’s important that employers know how to prevent fires and our fire marshal courses educate them to be able to do this.

“As a first aid charity, we obviously strive to ensure that everyone who needs first aid receives it, but we also want to stress that preventing accidents happening in the first place is important,” added Chris.

The four-hour courses, which start on February 7, cover the role of the designated fire marshal, including how to spot hazards and organise evacuations, as well as different types of fire extinguishers and how to use them correctly.
