THE fact that she was a viscountess doubtless opened a few doors, but there was also something compelling in Frances Wolsely's make-up that equipped her for the task ahead.

When Arthur Beckett founded the Sussex County Magazine in December 1926, he asked her to contribute to a series entitled Historic Houses of Sussex.

Over the years that followed she rose to the challenge with distinction, describing 115 houses in all, her last four articles appearing posthumously.
