HISTORIC AREAS STUDY

Lewes District Council is seeking the views of local people on new studies of historic areas in the district.

The studies cover Chailey St Georges, Newick (two studies covering Church Road and the Green), Kingston, Iford, Rodmell and Piddinghoe.

The new studies, called 'Conservation Area Appraisals', give an overview of the history and development of each area and aim to define what it is that makes them special.

They also identify features which help make an area locally distinct and contribute to its character, for example historic and locally significant buildings, important green and open spaces, memorable views, natural elements like trees.

They may even include intangible qualities such as activities, sights and smells which are characteristic of a place. The documents also identify elements that could be improved.

These are the latest in a series of Conservation Area Appraisals for all the 35 Conservation Areas in the district and will help to ensure that their special qualities are not harmed by inappropriate development.
