Holocaust Memorial Day events taking place in the city this month

Vigils and acts of remembrance will be held in Brighton and Hove to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day on Monday, January 27.

The annual day of remembrance is dedicated to those who were affected by The Holocaust and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur.

Holocaust Memorial Day will be held on the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp this year.

Several events will be taking place in the city centre and details can be found below.

A silent vigil will take place at the Quaker Meeting House, Ship Street, from 3-5 pm.

Reverend Anthea Ballam and David Selo from the Brighton and Hove Interfaith Contact Group will speak at an act of remembrance from 5-6 pm.

Public talks will take place at this event organised by Brighton and Hove Stand Up to Racism, to be held at the Brighthelm Centre, North Road on Wednesday, January 29, 6-8 pm.

Speakers include Gaby Weiner, author of Tales of Loving and Leaving, and Jason Porter from the University of Brighton will present a talk entitled ‘Hidden from History: The Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals’.

This memorial event will take place at Sussex University’s Jubilee Lecture Theatre in the Jubilee Building, Falmer on Wednesday, February 5, from 2-5.45 pm.

University professors will give historical talks and Holocaust survivor Hannah Lewis MBE will give spoken testimony of childhood during the Holocaust.

This event is open to all but booking is essential.
