Homes without water hits 1,600

THE number of homes in the Rye area affected by a water main burst this morning has now reached 1,600 say South East Water.

Bottled water is now available for customers affected by the water supply problems in the Northiam area.

Supplies are located outside Jempsons, Main Street, Peasmarsh, and at Beckley Village Centre.

The burst is located on a 9-inch strategic water main on the B2165 near Northiam which has caused supply problems in the Clayhill, Beckley, Four Oaks, Peasmarsh, Rye Foreign and Playden areas.

A spokesman for the water company said: “The burst occurred at approximately 1am this morning (Wednesday March 20) and our technician was immediately sent to investigate.

“Repair gangs are currently on site and working to repair the burst as quickly as possible, it is estimated that repairs will be completed later this morning.”

Simon Robertson, Head of Distribution for South East Water, said: “We now believe approximately 1,600 properties may have low water pressure or no water.

“I would like to apologise to the customers affected for the inconvenience this is causing and reassure them that we are doing all we can to restore supplies as soon as possible.”
