It is expected planning officers at Arun District Council will be able to decide if the work can receive planning permission.

The news was given to Pagham Parish Council’s latest meeting by its chairman, Cllr Ray Radmall.

“The plan could be approved by the officers under delegated powers in the second half of April.

“It depends on the final outstanding issues being ticked off in time. It seems probable that can be done,” he said. “If that is the case, and the decision can be delegated, it means it does not have to wait until Arun’s following development control committee meeting.

“So, it can possibly be dealt with that much sooner. If that happens, and the decision is made by early May, that gives a bit of breathing space before we have to get the work done.”

As reported, the widely popular community scheme will see a channel cut in the growing Church Norton Spit off Pagham Beach.

The spit is forcing the tides in and out of Pagham Harbour to scour the beach and threaten the beachfront bungalows along West Front Road as well as flooding a large area of Pagham.

Creating a channel will restore the harbour mouth to its position before 2003. But the work needs to satisfy environmental rules because of the harbour’s status as a globally important wetland.

Cllr Brian James said two problems were caused by the spit. As well as the scouring, it was stopping the beach benefiting from the longshore drift movement of shingle.
