Hoteliers slam lack of tourism investment

WORTHING town centre manager Sharon Clarke has said she agrees with former county councillor Cyril Selby's view that the town is not being sold to its full potential and more could be done.

Local hotels also share Mr Selby's view, saying more could be done to promote tourism.

Mrs Clarke said a lot was going on to promote Worthing but there was not a joined up approach from the council and a lack of communication and collaboration.

She said this lack of collaboration stemmed from several different budgets in areas like tourism, theatres and the community.

She feels the lack of an overall budget has led to a disjointed approach.

Mrs Clarke said: " I think the town could be sold more effectively and at the moment it depends on who has got a budget."

Worthing Borough Council leader Keith Mercer said he still feels enough is being done to promote tourism in the town.

He said: " We have got a very clear approach in and to my knowledge no-one has suggested it's not sufficient."

He added that the council would not open the tourist offices at Easter and would not change the policy in the future because the warm Easter this year was an unusual situation.

Mr Selby had come up with the idea of a mobile tourist information service to promote the town, after tourism centres failed to open over the busy Easter weekend.
