How you can represent your community in Rother

All 38 seats on Rother District Council will be up for grabs for a four-year term of office when the district goes to the polls again in May next year.

The event, to be held at the Town Hall, Bexhill, on Monday, November 19 from 6.30 to 8.30pm, will offer people the chance to speak to current serving councillors and senior officers.

They will also be able to find out more about the varied services the council provides, the challenges it faces in the years ahead and the support councillors receive.

Cllr Lord Ampthill, chairman of the member development task group, said: “As a councillor, you are able to influence decisions and help shape the future of your local area and the district. It’s a very rewarding role and provides a great opportunity to gain experience, learn new skills and give something back to the community.

“People from any walk of life can stand for election so I’d encourage anyone who’s interested in getting more involved in local life to come along to this event and find out more.”

At present, anyone can stand for election if they are aged 18 or over, a UK, EU, Republic of Ireland or Commonwealth citizen and are on the electoral register in Rother, or have lived or worked in the area for 12 months before the election.

Although most candidates represent political parties, people do not have to be affiliated to any party to stand for election and can campaign as an independent candidate.

People interested in attending the event are asked to register their interest by emailing [email protected] by Wednesday, November 14.
