Hundreds show for lifeboat open day

Hundreds of people turned out to Shoreham Lifeboat Station yesterday when it opened its doors for an annual open day.

Visitors to the station at Kingston Beach near Brighton Road saw the organisation’s two lifeboats launch throughout the day, as well as a man over board demonstration, which was assisted by the Brighton and Littlehampton RNLI lifeboats.

These included both the all weather Tamar class lifeboat and inshore D class lifeboat, which were launched twice, and hundreds queued to go aboard the two lifeboats to meet the crew.

The RNLI mascot Stormy Stan was also there to meet and greet the children, and was on board the all weather lifeboat for the second launch.

Shoreham lifeboat coxswain Steve Smith said: “Our annual open day once again proved popular and it was great to have so much support from the public and hopefully raise awareness of what we do.”

Also included in the day were a number of displays of model lifeboats by the lifeboat model society, a bouncy castle, refreshments, face painting, a tombola, and sea safety advice.

This year a new feature introduced was a simulator of what it is like to drive a lifeboat, which was set up in the station’s new classroom.

All the proceeds from the day go to Shoreham RNLI, which is mainly operated by volunteer crew members and shore helpers.

The RNLI has been operating for more than 150 years in Shoreham, while the new lifeboat station was completed in 2010 after a community appeal by the organisation.
