Hurst Green village voice - March 23

Starting in Burwash, slides of interiors and exteriors of houses were shown and soon members of the audience were calling out various occupations of the owners, or often tenants while the owners lived in grander style still.

There were the houses of merchants, iron masters, lawyers, politicians, farmers -one gentleman suggested “smuggler”-and indeed this may have been partly true in some periods of history. Many of the large and ancient houses in this area have been altered, enlarged or decreased in size and there were several surprises for the active audience.

Next month is the AGM and Kevin Gordon will bring along his large collection of post cards for display. If you have not been before come along and meet the friendly members on April 11. Refreshments and raffle to be enjoyed.

The future makers of history, the pre-school nursery group, Little Acorns, have been busy making Mothering Sunday cards and many a shelf in the Hurst Green homes will now be adorned with these colourful creations which will be kept for many years among parental souvenirs.

On March 31 the Primary School holds an Easter Fair from 11 -2. Everyone is invited to support at the school.

Classes are held at the Village Hall organised by the Adult College for Rural East Sussex. There are a few places left on the course for Soft Furnishings and Upholstery on Tuesday mornings.All ability catered for.

Also, Exercise and Movement Gently will start on Monday 16 April, 10.00 -11.30.

On being asked what activity had been going on, information revealed that a course on “Arcadia: Art, Architecture and Gardens” was about to finish and had been full for some time. It is hoped that such a popular title, or similar, may appear again in September. If this appeals to you contact the address given and prepare to be entranced in the Village Hall, thanks to the University of Sussex which established these Adult Learning courses. Brochures are expected to be delivered throughout the village in due course.

Lost in the woods, not babes, but lead for a dog. This retractable lead was left inadvertently outside a back gate from a house in Burgh Hill. If anyone has found it and wants to return it to the owners they can be reached by telephoning the number at the foot of this column. It would be much appreciated if this could be returned.

Another matter concerning our canine friends is the usual one but the nuisance is made in the woods which, we are told, are becoming “disgusting”.

Also, soiled toilet paper has been found . This may be used by dog owners in an effort to stop the nuisance but attention has been drawn to this problem which is upsetting for those who like to enjoy our lovely wooded area.

The Short Mat Bowling Club remains very active and appeals to all ages. It is not limited to Hurst Green residents. Mr. Maurice Bogue is the person to contact on 01580 860 336.

1.25 from the George.

Ongoing is the scheme for sending parcels to our troops. Gifts for our admired fighting men can be left at Technique Hairdressers and Lesley will see they are dispatched. They are “going very well” - so keep the flag flying with useful items to include in the next parcel.
