CHURCH NEWS: The 10.30 am service on Sunday will be Parish Eucharist for 19th Sunday after Trinity. I understand that those who went to the Harvest Supper had a splendid time and a delicious meal. There was a change of menu from a sort of traditional cold meat, baked potato and salad, to a hot meal which was much appreciated. During the coming week there are lots of religious and famous people’s anniversaries. On Monday 11th October we remember Elizabeth Fry, the prison reformer; Tuesday 12th It is Edward the Confessor, King of England 1066; Thursday 15th it is Teresa of Avila and Nicholas Breakspear who became Pope Adrian 1V, the only Englishman to have been elected Pope. Importantly in this area, Wednesday 14th October was the Battle of Hastings in 1066. I wonder what our country would be like if Harold had won the battle instead of William?

WEATHER: The glorious “Indian Summer” has finally run out. Today we have grey clouds and drizzle. I suppose that the gardens will benefit, and fine weather is promised for the week end. The jet stream is apparently dividing to go both north and south of the U.K. The beans have finished but I am still picking tomatoes out in the little vegetable plot. No frost yet that I am aware of.

QUEEN’S HEAD: On Sunday 11th October the live music will be played by Blazing Saddles, their music being described as Hot Stuff. The bicycle ride round the roads, lanes and tracks of the 1066 countryside has raised well over £800 to date, with more yet to come in.

CRAFT SHOW: The Autumn Craft Fair was not very well attended, which was a shame as there was a great selection of stalls on view. Sadly, we did not get in last week’s Village Voice, which did not help. Sandra thinks that her e-mail is floating around in cyber space somewhere. Thank you as always to Lin, and Mary for serving the refreshments, and to Wendy for baking some lovely cakes. The next Craft Fair will be on Saturday 7th November. Hope that you will be able to come.

ICKLESHAM TRUST COMMITTEE: Here is a date for your diaries. The AGM will take place on Friday 11th December, 7 for 7.30pm, details nearer the time. More importantly, The Chair, Mrs. Corinne Merricks will not be standing for re-election after many years service to the Trust. The Secretary, Mrs. Sandra Stunt, will be standing down too. We are still looking for a hall bookings clerk. If you would like to get involved in the community and join in with village life, these are great opportunities. Assistance will be given to anyone wishing to take over any of these roles. There are exciting times ahead with the proposed new pavilion to look forward to. This is your chance to get involved.

WINCHELSEA ARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIETY: There is to be a guided tour of All Saints Church, Icklesham on Saturday 17th October at 2.30 pm. This will be led by Mr. Laurie Bowman on behalf of the Winchelsea group. You may think that you know all that there is to know about the church, but it will be fun to find out a great deal more. The meeting is open to everyone and all are welcome.

SCHOOL NEWS: As well as being very successful in the Horticultural Society’s Show, the children have written very nice appreciations of the event. There is a vacancy for a Parent Governor at the school. This is a very rewarding role which benefits the whole school community. If anyone considering this as a possibility for them would like further information, contact the school. There is still time to donate a teddy for the Project Paddington. Bears should arrive by 19th October.
