Icklesham Primary gains Gold

The award comes in recognition of the School’s commitment to, and excellence in, arts education.

Co-headteachers Pauline Higgs and Pauline Robinson said: “We are delighted that the Arts Council has recognised the exciting and dynamic arts education programme that we provide for our students.

“This is the fourth time we have received the Gold Award.

“Our pupils have enjoyed working with Laura Mitchell, a dance instructor who comes into school each week to take the pupils for a variety of dance styles from traditional dance to modern, creative, cultural and themed. We would like to thank all our staff for their hard work in achieving this award.

“Artsmark is more than just a mark of distinction to us; taking part in the scheme has enabled us to develop our arts provision and see our pupils become more self confident, motivated and engaged in their learning. As a small school we feel proud that we can offer such a wide range of experiences in Art and Design, Creative Writing and Poetry, Dance, Drama and Music both in school and as extra curricular activities.”

Alan Davey, Chief Executive, Arts Council England, said: “Arts Council England believes that the earlier children are creatively inspired, the more likely they are to have a lifelong engagement with art - something that can transform lives and give young people a voice for their thoughts and feelings.”

“Artsmark – now nationally recognised as a prestigious and coveted award supported by the Department for Education and Department for Culture Media and Sport – sets the standard for an outstanding arts provision in schools and other education settings and it’s great to see so many new settings attaining Artsmark this year. This award recognises Icklesham CEP School’s commitment to providing exciting art experiences and their belief in the power of creativity.”

Children put on an end of term performance “Hagbane’s Doom,” a musical play using the theme a greater good will always triumph over evil. This was performed by Oak and Willow Classes to the rest of the school, parents, relatives and friends.

Class Teacher Mrs Knellor said: “I was amazed by the quality of the singing and acting. A big thank you to Mrs Piggott and Mrs Maynard for all their help.”

The children also enjoyed a day of drumming led by Mr Bicat from “Duende – a Capoeira and Drumming Group”
