Iden

THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE: Last week, on the way to Dymchurch, I was treated to a spectacle, which cost me nothing at all. Not a brass farthing. The countryside around Iden, as if overnight, had turned '˜Persil White'. The May blossom cascaded from it's trees like the sweep of a bridal train. Some say that it's unlucky to pick May blossom, so I never do, although I walk under ladders. There is just something about May blossom that seems to want to be left alone. Then of course there was blackthorn, the dainty white flower which produces the sloe fruit [which makes excellent gin]. It's sharp prickles set it apart from the May blossom, but the two seem neighbourly enough. We drove around corners, and were greeted by beautiful white moon daisies, and cow parsley wavered on either side of the road showing us it's lacy flowers. I would have paid some kind of toll to see it, or at least dropped a coin or two into an honesty box, but no, it was white, and pure, and free for all to enjoy. Sometimes nature lets us in for nothing!

A SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION: There will be a service of Holy Communion in Iden Parish Church, at 9.30 a.m. this Sunday.

A LAST HURRAH: On Friday June 10th, there will be a special day to support ‘The Bell’ in Iden, from 11am until late. This is to give us all a chance to say goodbye to John and Lindsay, who have run our pub so well. We will all be sad to see them go, and wish them every happiness in their new ventures. They have brought life and friendship to ‘The Bell’, in spades. The pub will undergo some refurbishment, and will open under new management [details to follow] .We know how hard John and Lindsay have worked, and we have all benefitted from their hospitality. Good luck and many thanks, and love to them and little Oscar and Darcy.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO A SPECIAL LADY: Since I’ve been unable to perform my duty, at Iden’s Pop-In, and Bingo, Janet Wood has stepped in and helped Ray, which I can tell you, we are most grateful for. Janet has been there consistently, and in her usual modest way just gets on with the hard work. Thank you also to Carol Bourne, and all the other people who have helped wash up, and serve coffee etc. My mum in law used to say that a little help is worth all the pity. I don’t know what we would have done without you all.

THE POP-IN: The next Pop-In , will be on Monday13th June, at 11am, in Iden village hall. The Pop-In is always a cheery start to the week, and it’s so nice to see everyone, and catch up on all the news. Everyone is welcome.

The more the merrier!

BINGO: The next Bingo session is on Thursday16th June, in Iden village hall. Doors open at 2pm, Eyes down at 2.30pm. Everyone from the Rye area is very welcome. There is a flier, a raffle, a jackpot, and a light tea at half time. Do turn up, and give it a try.

FISH FINGER SANDWICHES: That’s what my husband is cooking for tea tonight. For a man who has never had to boil an egg, he is turning into a right little Jamie Oliver. Isn’t it funny how simple fare cooked by someone else is the bees knees. Whoever invented fish fingers [was it Captain Birdseye?] was a splendid fellow. Little rectangles of joy, with a dash of tomato sauce. As cheap as chips. and quite heavenly!

ONE STICK ANNIE: Since my hip replacement, I am now using one stick, and this morning I was using that stick to poke washing into the machine. I am able to go up and down stairs, and I am very grateful for small mercies. I have to say that surgeons and anaesthetists are wonderful people. Every day [or so it seems in our house] my husband watches Ed China on ‘Wheeler Dealers’, transforming a car into a better more serviceable and aesthetically pleasing car. It’s a clever gift, but he isn’t working on a human being. Imagine standing by the hour piecing a human being together at one end, and maintaining an airway the other [such teamwork, and such trust] I used to think the Two Ronnies with their ‘Four candles ‘were the best of teams, but but they are a poor second to my surgeon and my anaesthetist who help people like me every day. God Bless them!
