NICE TO BE HOME: Sometimes, it’s nice to just stay home, isn’t it, with nothing particular planned .Basically I’m a ‘home bod’. I enjoy the occasional day, just mooching around wiping at the rim of the odd sauce bottle. If there is nothing particular on the agenda, it’s nice to re-acquaint ourselves with our own nooks and crannies A day at home ‘grounds’ us, and away from everyone’s gaze, and possible scrutiny, our homes offer us nothing but friendship. .Everyone’s home [like a baby’s blanket] has a particular aroma., safe and familiar, a mixture of baking perhaps, roast dinners, wood smoke , favourite perfume, bleach [probably] and who knows what else we may sprinkle into the bath tub or rub into the furniture. Our own persona, and sense of belonging even seeps into the walls. As soon as we open the door and step into our own hallowed space, we relax, and we do get a greeting of sorts, even from an empty house, a feeling that it’s been waiting for our return. Iden is not a place to rest on our laurels [in truth it can be a bit of a madhouse, a hive of activity] It’s wonderful to join things and be jostled into frivolity, but there are days when I think “oh please, slow down a minute”, and I pick up the remote, settle down beside the cat with a few crisps, and watch something on TV that requires very little thought!

THE FLOWER LADIES ARE ALL SET TO ENTERTAIN: Coffee and cake on a nice May morning is just what we need, and the ‘Flower Group’ from Iden Parish Church are hosting a coffee morning in the Old Hall, on Saturday 16th May, from 10 am- 12 midday. Everyone is welcome, and proceeds go to buying flowers for next year’s Flower festival.. If anyone is willing to donate a cake or scones, it would be very much appreciated .

ANNUAL CHARITY WALK: The Rotary Club Of Rye And Winchelsea, are holding their ‘Annual Walk’, on Sunday 24th May. The Charities benefiting from the walk, are Rye, Winchelsea And District Memorial Hospital, and St. Michael’s Hospice, but if you nominate your own charity, half of what you raise will go to them. The walk itself sounds like a joy, because it takes you along the river Brede, towards Camber Castle, and to Castle Water, with it’s wonderful bird life. You can return on a circular route back to Rye, or continue on through the nature reserve. It is a walk, not a race, and distances vary from 4 to10miles. Adjacent to the castle there are toilets, and drinks can be obtained there.

WHERE DOES THE WALK START?: Phillips And Stubbs Estate Agents [47-49 Cinque Ports Street, Rye. Walking can start anytime from 9am-11am.

HOW TO REGISTER: Phone 07530-772000, or email [[email protected].] , or email for a sponsorship form,[which should be filled in by your sponsors] and given in at Phillips and Stubbs. Sponsorship- money may be paid in on the day, or when you have collected the amounts pledged. If not walking for charity, you may still enter, under 16’s walk free of charge, but adults pay £7 per head [payable on the day]. All walkers will receive a completion certificate, and trophies will be awarded to the team with most sponsorship, and to individual walkers [according to age], with most sponsorship .All walkers are invited to join a ‘Treasure Hunt’, and to visit the courtyard of Camber Castle [a must for ‘Wolf Hall’ fans!]

THE SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION: There will be a service of Holy Communion in Iden Parish Church at 9.30 am on Sunday10th May.

THE POP-IN: There will be a Pop-In, in Iden village hall, at 11am, on Monday 11th May. Everyone is welcome. It’s nice to see people chatting and enjoying a coffee .In no time at all the village hall comes to life, as people start arriving.[Biscuits, books and bric-a-brac, too]It’s a time to catch up on all the news!

BINGO: The next bingo session will be in Iden village hall, on Thursday 14th May. Doors open at 2pm, eyes down at 2.30pm. There is a raffle, and a light tea is provided. Everyone from Iden and the surrounding district is welcome. There is a jackpot, and a flier, as well as the ordinary bingo books . It’s a good chance to meet people, and to win some money. Proceeds go to Iden village hall.

TAKE IT OUT ON THE KNOCKER: Speaking of enjoying just being at home, “Let them take it out on the knocker” my Mother- In –Law used to say, if she wanted some privacy, and someone was rapping on the door. She was a wise, outspoken Londoner. Sometimes her quips were so funny, you could have ‘bottled’ her, but sometimes I felt like leaving the top off the bottle and allowing her to evaporate! She was an expert at rooting out my shortcomings on occasions, but she was generous to a fault, and I miss her. Now that she is knitting away in the sky, I wish she was here, so that we could meet on a different footing. It was me that needed to be older and wiser in order to understand that she was wiser than me, and right about so many things. There are so many people that I would like to be given a chance to be nicer to, to appreciate more. [Do you ever feel like that?] I think we will get the chance, because I think that none of us are ever thrown together just by chance.
