THE BIBLE AND SHAKESPEARE: Do you know, I enjoy writing the village voice so much that my housework is suffering.[I wonder if you’d all just mind lifting your feet while I do under this settee. There, I knew it, the dust is phenomenal] Then of course, I must change the beds. Now, I’m sure that I wouldn’t change the beds so often, but I always think, “what if the doctor should need to visit”. You see, I would be concerned that while he was brandishing his stethoscope, he could well be taking stock of the state of my floral bed linen! The thing is that we cannot have it all, much as we try. We lead such busy lives, especially in Iden, [there is never a dull moment here is there?] and we are human, and prone to the odd frailty. One of my favourite songs is Peggy Lee, singing ‘I’m a woman w-o--m-a-n-. .You know the one where she is trying to feed the baby, clean the floor and make a dress at the same time. [something like that anyway]. That would be one of my choices on ‘Desert Island discs’. I would play it for inspiration [while I was digging a trench with a coconut shell] What would you take on a desert island, besides the Bible and Shakespeare? [Possibly the most useful would be ‘Poisonous Flora In The Islands Of The Pacific’] I wouldn’t have the slightest idea, because so many wonderful books shape our lives.[I suppose if push came to shove, for me though, it would have to be ‘Great Expectations. I’d have to take Pip and Joe Gargery with me-----“Ever the best of friends ain’t us Pip old chap”, [and then Pip gets a little too big for his boots for a while doesn’t he?] You could always write your own little ‘ditty in the sand though, and when the tide came in it would almost be like turning a page. Certainly, I would try and sneak in a map, so that I could find my way back to Iden. It’s not bad here is it?

GET ME TO THE CHURCH ON TIME: Tomorrow, in Iden Parish Church, at.7.30 pm, Bob Hammond, Dov Perminski, and Laura Heales will perform songs in a concert entitled, ‘The Great American Song Book’. There will be no concert fee, but there will be a retiring collection, and drinks will be served [donation only]

THE HARVEST SUPPER: Folk have been talking about the harvest Supper in the village hall on. October 4th, and it’s making me feel ‘peckish’. As soon as it starts to get a bit chilly, we need warming food and good company, and this is just what the doctor ordered. There will be a conjurer to entertain us, and it should be a good evening. The time is 7.pm, for 7.30 pm, and tickets are available now in Iden Village Stores.

THE SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION: There will be a service of Holy Communion in Iden Parish Church, at 9.30am on Sunday, 28th September.

WELL DONE IDEN BOWLS CLUB: I have just heard that Iden Bowls Cub has won the league for the fourth consecutive year. That is some going for a small club .The club captain Pauline Harmer is justly proud. . More news from Iden Bowls Club is that they had a fund raising tournament on 11th September . Forty eight bowlers took part, from as far away as ‘Hooe’, and they raised £850, after deducting expences.. Talk about ‘small is beautiful’. There is something so ‘ quintessentially English’ about seeing people in their white tops and grey trousers bowling on a stretch of green on a summer’s day..

A SIGN OF THE TIMES: Thank you to all the people who helped clean our village signs last week. There was a little posse of people with buckets and scrubbing brushes wandering around Iden in ‘high- viz’ jackets, with a look of determination about them .The signs look much better for their ‘scrub up’. Many thanks to Mary Philo, Cathy Wootten, Paddy Coleman, Valerie Walker, Jill Woods , Ray Griffin, Stephen and Emily Pockley, Stevie Coleman and Morris Metcalf. Also to the couple from ‘Herringfield’ [thank you]

GET YOUR THINKING CAPS ON!: I do love a quiz don’t you? Please ring Pat Buckland for choice of food and numbers.[telephone 01797-280-589]

CALENDARS FOR SALE: The 2015 ‘Iden’ calendars are now on sale in Iden Village Stores. Photographed and compiled by Rod Stuart, the Calendars are a month by month pictorial feast of Iden views., nice to own ourselves, and nice to give as gifts.

‘LET’S PRETEND THAT WE’RE TOGETHER ALL ALONE!: This week I went to Rye market, and the dulcet tones of Jim Reeves were being played at the CD stall.. My husband was way off somewhere buying masking tape, and I have to admit, I felt like grabbing the first man I saw [probably someone on a coach trip from Aberystwyth], and dancing [although he would have been deeply embarrassed, because I’m a terrible dancer] There is something so nice and ‘last dance’ about Jim Reeves though. So much water seems to have passed under the bridge, since the time when all we cared about was whether our hair went right, and the possibility of romance was just around the corner, but I must say I fairly floated towards the fruit and veg stall on the strength of that one track. People imagine that when we get somewhat past our prime, we are too old to be sloppy and sentimental. Not a bit of it, I may have been choosing a cabbage, but actually, I was miles away, somewhere on a dance floor!
