Dad Ian said: “Jamie aims high at whatever he does. At present he is getting up at 4.55am Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays to swim and he goes back to the pool in the evening to carry on. He took part in triathlons from May to September last year. It’s a tough call but Jamie has the fitness and the willpower to succeed. What’s more, he loves what he does.”

Jamie played high level rugby but his interest in triathlon began with a talk by triathlete Paul Hedger at Uckfield Community Technology College. He fell in love with the discipline and worked hard improving his all-round fitness. He studies sport and exercise science at Sussex Downs College in Eastbourne, was offered two university places to read podiatry and will study full-time at Brighton University’s Eastbourne campus. His interest in biochemical assessment was sparked, partly by his long-term part-time job at Clarks in Eastbourne – one of few footwear retailers to take the musculo-skeletal structure of the foot seriously. Because of the long-term commitment, many triathletes are in their late twenties or even their thirties. This weekend he begins his summer campaign, taking part in the British Championships in Windsor Great Park.
