Investigations into sewage leak

THE Environment Agency is continuing to investigate an incident which saw sewage flooding into gardens and school grounds near the A21 last month.

The organisation confirmed that around 20 fish were killed when a burst pipe sent sewage into a pond in Moat Lane, Westfield, on April 8.

Some of the sewage also ended up on part of the Claremont School grounds.

Southern Water replaced a 26-metre section of pipe and worked through the night setting up temporary pumps, using tankers to remove affected water and installing oxygenating jets to try and protect wildlife.

The Environment Agency remained on the scene to monitor the impact of the leak on local watercourses.

The organisation’s investigation could take several weeks to complete.
