Isabelle takes to her new wheelchair

THANKS to the generosity of Observer readers, friends, family and the valiant efforts of Ben Nevis climbers Victor and Lee Lawrence, a perfect pink powered wheelchair was delivered to Isabelle Everest on Friday morning.

Isabelle, of St Leonards, has diplegic cerebral palsy.

Her new wheelchair, “Izzy 1”, will provide Isabelle with greater independence and increase her confidence as a result of being able to keep up with her peers at Battle Pre-School Playgroup.

She is delighted with her new piece of kit and is getting practice at moving around in it.

Mum Paula said: “She absolutely loves it. It is hydraulic and the seat goes up and down sufficiently for her to be able to reach high things and also low enough for her to get onto her bed from it.

“It has indicators and lights, a horn and all sorts.

“It has a joystick so that Isabelle can steer it round things and she’s getting very good at that.

“Most importantly it has a parental control so that we can stop her if she gets into difficulty or goes too far ahead of us at speed!

“Isabelle will shortly be able to go on a course where she will be shown how to use the equipment to its full potential.

“We cannot thank everyone enough for their hard work, support and generosity in making this happen for Isabelle.

“It truly is life changing for her and us.”
