Isfield & Little Horsted

SWEET VISIT: Treacle was the sweet visitor to Isfield's Wednesday Club when he took along his owner, Moira Harrison, so club members could hear about the great work of dogs such as him who allow people with tricky medical conditions to leave a more-normal life. Treacle, a King Charles/Poodle cross, knows just when Moira, who has Type 1 Diabetes and hails from Ringmer, is heading for as potential problem with her blood sugar level. It's all down to his sense of smell, all dogs have a sniffability way ahead of humans, and when he reckons there's a problem ahead he issues increasingly robust alerts to Moira. Club members heard that this amazing sense of smell is used to train dogs to detect various conditions, including cancer. Moira was giving her talk on behalf of Medical Detection Dogs, a relatively small national charity that needs up to around Â£11,000 just to train and support one canine.
