Isfield & Little Horsted

SCARECROWS: This weekend will, hopefully, see the emergence of a splendid display of scarecrows in Isfield, maybe along with some prayer mats if the predictably unpredictable British weather continues into next week. The Scarecrow Trail from the Lavender Line station, along Station Road and including Northfield Cottages and Tile Barn Close, has become a popular precursor to the Isfield Village Fete, which will open at noon on Sunday June 26 in the ICE field behind The Laughing Fish. The theme for this year's Scarecrow Trail is The Queen's 90th Birthday. Sues Crawford, who masterminds the Trail, says scarecrows can be based loosely on HM's birthday, the Royal Family generally or just birthdays. As usual there will be a wide variety of attractions at the fete, including various stalls, including light and not-so-light refreshments, a novelty dog show, terrier racing, face-painting, a hog roast, a performance by inChoir (mainly members of the Uckfield section) and by Acrojou, the rural touring entertainers, school sports and the ever-popular and sometimes wonderfully messy egg-throwing competition. At 10.30am on Fete morning the regular St Margaret's parish church Family Service will be held in a tent on the ICE field. The service will be led by Canon Hugh Moseley with music provided by Uckfield's Reflections group.

FOOTIE FAMILY: Sophie Carpenter, who hails from Little Horsted, has followed in her brother Joseph’s footsteps at Uckfield Grasshoppers, the junior soccer club. At the club’s awards evening Sophie was named manager’s player of the year in the girls’ under-12s section; Joseph is a previous winner of the title in the boys’ section. Hannah Chevassaut was players’ player and Lena Kormaiyr Peters the most-improved players. Great Players in the boys’ under-12s were Joseph Clements and Charlie Hawes, with Thomas Hill and Sean Sofianos achieving similar recognition in the younger boys’ section.

St Michael’s, Little Horsted: First Sunday, Communion (11am); second, Holy Communion, Book of Common Prayer (8am); third, Family service, (11am); fourth and fifth, Holy Communion, Book of Common Prayer (8am).
