It's a golden gallery

Chichester art collectors are queueing up to offer gifts of artworks to the Pallant House Gallery as its nationwide reputation grows.

Director Stefan van Raay told district councillors the gallery had now established itself as a national player, and was generally regarded as the most important collection of British modern art in the world, outside Tate Britain.

"It has attracted a lot of people who are collectors and who would like to give something to the gallery," he said.

"They do not want to go to a big gallery, where they could see works go into store.

"We now have 12 major bequests or gifts on the table."
