Jennifer Binnie solo show coming to blackShed gallery

Jennifer’s known as co-founder of the Neo Naturist cabaret along with her sister Christine Binnie and Wilma Johnson, as well as for her film collaborations back in the 1980s with former boyfriend, Grayson Perry and the more recent work done with her sister as the Binnie Sister’s.

The work in this show continues to prove that Jennifer Binnie is an accomplished independent artist.

Jennifer lives in East Sussex, in a small rural village just outside of Eastbourne.

Her paintings are rich and seductive, thickly painted panels covered in dabs of colour, dense layers of paint, heavily textured with areas of scratched-in detail.

They deliver visionary illusions of forest scenes reflective of where she lives, but we are moved into an imaginary world inhabited by animal-headed fiddle players, fox-faced women, human-footed horses.

German expressionism and folk art comes to mind, but don’t underestimate her influences. The work is emotional and abstract, reminiscent of Odilon, Redon, William Blake, Chagal and Kandinsky.

Jennifer’s career started from humble beginnings, with a fine art degree from Portsmouth Polytechnic where she met Grayson Perry in 1979.

Later Jennifer and Grayson moved to London where they shared a squat in Mornington Crescent. During this time Jennifer worked prolifically in painting, performance and film.

In recent years, work from this period has featured in exhibitions at the ICA, England & Co, ‘First Site’ in Colchester and in Kunstverein, Munich.

James Birch gave Jennifer and Grayson their first solo shows back in 1984 in his gallery in the New Kings Road.

She continued exhibiting throughout London and elsewhere including Johannesburg, San Antonio, Texas and Tokyo. More recently she has had solo shows at Gallery 286 in Earls Court.

With more than 30 exhibitions during the past 20 years, her work has always extended beyond her own practice and following the success of the gallery’s previous show with Hastings artist Chris Milton, Jennifer Binnie is a great show that promises to delight.

Exhibition opens July 6 and runs to August 16 at the blackShed gallery Russet Farm, Robertsbridge TN32 5NH.
