For many years Jon Carthew has been the unsung hero of Battle Cricket Club, making sure that the historic George Meadow is looking immaculate for every game.

Last Saturday the club sang his praises by awarding him the Jeanette Bransby trophy for his service to the club, presented by Chairman Stuart Reeves.

The trophy, given by long-time supporter Norman Bransby in memory of his late wife Jeanette, is for the person who has done most for the club during the year, and it was fitting that Jon should be its first ever recipient. The trophy, a silver “Quaich”, was designed specially by Norman and is a commemorative example of a two-handled Scottish drinking cup.

Those that know the long hours which Jon unstintingly gives to the club as its groundsman were thrilled that he won the trophy. But he gives so much more. He is now the regular scorer for the club, keeping an immaculate “book”, and has often filled in for that elusive eleventh man who has failed to turn up.

Presenting the award, Chairman Stuart Reeves said “There can be no more worthy winner. Of the four nominations made, his was way out front. It is not just his immense, and often hidden, contributions, that stand out, but also his genuine love for the ground, and his feel for the importance of its beautiful and historic surroundings, which he has done so much to preserve, not just for the club, but for the community of Battle.”
