Long-distance runner Kate Condon spoke to the Observer this week from California.

"It's early in the morning here," she said. "The temperature is 85C and it's going to be climbing up to 110C.

"I try to do most of my miles before it gets too hot. The temperature has been the biggest problem I have faced."

Despite this, Charlton resident Dr Condon expects to reach the finish of her journey along Route 66 next Mondayalmost a week ahead of schedule.

"I did a lot of miles in the early days and I'm very glad I did," she said, "because the temperatures have been so high."

The dermatology doctor has combined running with walking to keep clocking up the mileage on her way to completing the equivalent of 92 marathons.

It is likely to have taken her 57 days from her start in Chicago to her finish in Los Angeles.

Her efforts on the roads and through stunning scenery to highlight psorasis and its effect on people have been backed up by a team of relatives and family friends. Her only major injury to date was a broken arm after she fell over a twig. For the rest, she has ignored any niggles. "I just don't bother about them," she stated. "You get one and then, half an hour later, you get another one."

Her exploits have earned her pride of place in the Psorasis Foundation's latest newsletter. She is also planning to speak to the British Association of Dermatologists during its annual dinner from on the road in California.
