Keeping children safe online

The safety of children using the Internet is a major problem following the tragedy of youngsters who made a suicide pact online.

Parents are more worried than ever that they don't know what children are up to on-line, or how to protect them.

In response to growing concern, free courses are to be held for parents and carers of school age children at the Kip McGrath education centre in Beeching Road.

The courses are being funded by East Sussex Council through the Family Learning Department and will comprise three two hour sessions taught by an experienced and qualified teacher.

Parents will be shown both the dangers posed by the Internet and how to help keep children safe online.

Centre director Steph Dudson said: "The course is to give parents an idea of how their children use the Internet, the types of things they are likely to do, and to give parents a better understanding of those websites, and how to monitor them."

Steph stresses that the courses are suitable for anyone, even those who have no computer experience at all.

"It is for people to come along and do and get some information - it is not too heavy - just come along and learn a bit about it."

The sessions will be held in the TFI Timber Earthwise building in Beeching Road and will be on Tuesday February 5, 12 and 26, from 9.30-11.30am.

Places are limited so please call to reserve a free space on 01424 214412.
