Hide AdGary Towson, spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, said the kitchen of the first floor property was badly damage and so was the entrance hall.
He said the owners were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.
He said officers went round to the property to carry out a free home safety check, where smoke alarms would have been fitted free of charge.
