Last chance this year to see Winchelsea cellars
If you have not already visited the medieval cellars of Winchelsea, October will be the last chance in 2015. Winchelsea Archaeological Society has its final tours of the year scheduled for 3 and 18 October. Winchelsea boasts more than 50 medieval cellars, a number rivalled only in Southampton, Bristol and Norwich. Most of the cellars are vaulted and were built around 1290-1300, at the same time as the original town. The tours start at 2pm from Castle Street. The cost is £5 per head and includes a guidebook to the cellars. Proceeds go to WAS (registered charity 1143524) to pay for new archaeology. The tours last at least 90 minutes and explain why and how the cellars were built, and also describe something of the fascinating history of the Ancient Town of Winchelsea.
In addition to the cellar tours, on 4 October, WAS will be leading a walk that will trace the lost defences and quarters along the little-known western edge of the medieval town, across countryside not normally accessible. The walk starts in Castle Street at 2pm. It covers about 2 miles across fields and stiles, and goes uphill at points. It will take about 2-3 hours. Walking boots recommended. Children and dogs on leads welcome.
