League of Friends to vote on its direction

Members of the League of Friends of Bexhill Hospital will be asked at their annual general meeting to make a decision whether to update the organisation's charitable status.

Many similar bodies are taking advantage of recent legislation to update their constitutions in line with guidance offered by the Charity Commission and seek the commission’s authority to become what is termed a Charitable Incorporated Institution (CIO).

With minor amendments over the years, the League has operated under the same constitution since its inception in 1952.

Its general committee has been investigating the advantages of the new legislation and sought the help of a solicitor specialising in charity law.

Helen Harvie of H3 Solicitors will attend the League AGM at the Health Centre at Bexhill Hospital at 3pm on Wednesday, April 20 to explain the advantages of CIO status.

It will be for those members attending the meeting to decide by vote whether to the League should seek CIO status.

If approved by the membership and by the Charity Commission the new status would come into effect at the start of the charity’s new financial year on January 1, 2017. The League’s aims and objects – to provide equipment and comforts for Bexhill patients – would remain unchanged.

Bexhill Hospital opened on May 13, 1933 by Princess Helena Victoria, a cousin of King George V in the presence of Earl De La Warr as borough Mayor and a huge crowd.

Before that, Bexhillians and people from the surrounding area had to travel to Hastings for their medical care.

The League of Friends of Bexhill Hospital was founded in 1952. It is the continuing generosity of the people of Bexhill which has enabled the League to provide state-of-the-art medical equipment for the benefit of Bexhill patients for nearly 60 years.
