Leaving a lasting legacy to Littlehampton’s war heroes

But now, 100 years on, Littlehampton is paying tribute to some of the town’s heroic soldiers killed during the First World War by naming roads of a new housing estate in their honour.

The scheme, led by Barratt Homes and Bellway Homes, will see land to the west of Benjamin Gray Drive developed and is backed by Arun District Council.

The new road names are from the war memorial in Beach Road, and the roll of honour.

Arun councillor Ricky Bower said he ‘fully supported’ the idea and that it was a ‘fitting way to pay respects to those who lost their lives’.

Other supporters of the scheme include members of the Royal British Legion and the Royal Naval Association and Littlehampton Town Council.

Lynnette St Quintin, of Barratt Homes, said: “Road- naming is an important part of a new development as it is a legacy the new residents will have to live with for a long time, so we’re really pleased with this suggestion as it pays respect to our fallen heroes in the year marking 100 years since the start of the First World War.”

The new road names were chosen at random and include; Battin Lane, Boniface Avenue, Challen Vale, Etherington Place, Murray Rise, Peachey Way, Pengelly Gardens, Silvester Mead, Tatlow Chase and Upperton Grove.

David Laker, president of the Littlehampton Royal British Legion, said: “When we were contacted regarding the road names we said we thought it was a lovely idea and showed that people had not forgotten those that fought for their country.”
