Legacies help work of hospital Friends

LEGACIES totalling £436,429 enabled the League of Friends of Bexhill Hospital to fund projects costing more than £409,000 last year, the annual meeting will be told.

The report of the charity's trustees will be presented by league treasurer Robin Barnett at Wednesday's 3pm meeting in the hospital's health centre.

Mr Barnett said: "During the year projects totalling 409,690 and grants of 1,000 were approved.

"The net figure for the year was 322,574 after adjusting for items previously authorised but not purchased.

"With income for the year totalling 528,411, the year ended with a satisfactory balance from which to support the continued expansion and upgrading of the hospital and the provision of further medical equipment for the use of the community."

The drop in national interest rates as a result of the recession is reflected in the report.

Investment income in 2009 was 59,132 compared with 145,306 in 2008.

In addition to legacies, income included 6,133 in donations; 4,768 in subscriptions and 3,326 recovered as tax refund on gift aid donations, subscriptions and legacies.

Income from the shops run by league volunteers totalled 12,294 compared with 15,358 in 2008 - reflecting the length of time that beds were out of use while the hospital's Irvine Unit was being refurbished and modernised.

Equipment purchased included 107,369 worth of hi-tech critical care beds, a 79,780 ultrasound machine, a 64,605 diode laser, a 45,000 echo cardiograph machine and a 24,439 endoscopic stacking system.

At the end of 2009 the league had net assets of 2,475m.
