Lewes History Group: Sun Street book launch, AGM & lecture. A team of Lewes History Group (LHG) members have been researching the history of Sun Street since 2013, and have produced the Group's first book entitled: The Sun Street Story. It tells the story of one of the lesser known, yet more interesting streets in central Lewes, with its varied architecture styles. There will be a small exhibition and sales desk in King's Church foyer for the official launch.

Following a short AGM, Ian Everest will talk about the Women’s Land Army in Sussex. He grew up with tales from his mother who was one of 80,000 Land Girls during WWII. His talk includes some of her personal memories and a history of the role of women on Sussex farms around Lewes during the two world wars.

The venue is King’s Church building, Brooks Rd BN7 2BY. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30 start and everyone is welcome. There is a charge on the door of £3 for non-members but members are free this month. Free refreshments.www.leweshistory.org.uk

LEWES FOOTPATHS GROUP: On Wednesday 30th November, the coldest night of the year so far, we met at Lewes bus station. The temperature was hovering around zero. We took the 28 bus to Housedean Farm, crossed the bridge over the A27 and picked up the South Downs Way. As we climbed the first hill in brilliant sunshine, without a breath of wind, we warmed up and started shedding scarves and layers of clothing. On this clear, sparkling day the views were stunning.

We followed the ups and downs of the South Down Way until we stopped for our coffee break at the top of Balmer Down. Here, half a dozen men were manoeuvring sheep, one by one, through a metal enclosure. We found out that they were testing the sheep for pregnancy and if the ewes were carrying twins. From this viewpoint, we could clearly see the i-360 observation tower on Brighton seafront.

Suitably refreshed, we carried on to Blackcap before skirting the racing stables. When we reached Landport Bottom Nature Reserve one or two walkers, who lived at the top of town, turned off whilst the rest of us continued towards the town centre. Thirteen members took part in the walk which was led by Janet.

Our next walk will be a sunrise stroll on Tuesday 13th December. Meet at Waitrose Bus Stop to catch the 0656 bus to Ringmer and walk back to Lewes for breakfast. You are welcome to join us.

TRINITY CHURCH SOUTHOVER AND ST JOHN sub CASTRO: Tomorrow from 9.30am to 1.30pm in the Cliffe Hall next to St Thomas’s off Cliffe High Street, there is a bargain book sale in aid of Southover Counselling, so come and get those last minute Christmas presents. Please make a note that on Sunday week 18 December we are holding our Family Nativity services at 10am in Southover and 11.15am in St John sub Castro, then at 4pm and 6.30pm our traditional services of carols and lessons in Southover. There is also a more traditional communion service with carols at 4.30pm in St John sub Castro. Then for Christmas Eve we have our crib service in Southover at 3.30pm and a family crib service at 6pm in St John sub Castro. On Christmas Day at 10am in Southover we will have our Christmas family service. We hope that you and your family can join with us in celebrating the real Christmas message at one or more of our services over the Christmas period. Services this Sunday at St John sub Castro: 11.15am informal service with contemporary worship band; 3pm Town Christingle (Children’s Society) service for all the family. Services this Sunday at Southover: 8am communion (prayer book); 10am morning service with communion, with choir, organ and band; 6.30pm informal service with contemporary worship band.
