Lick of paint for Long Man

A squad of soldiers swapped blackening boots for whitening one of Sussex's best-loved landmarks.

Troops from 56 Signal Squadron, Eastbourne (pictured), fell in and set to work smartening up the Long Man of Wilmington.

Now the giant emblem whose origins are steeped in mystery stands out sharply against the downland turf.

The soldiers gave the familiar figure a bit of a blanco-ing - and the figure is now clearly visible to motorists along the A27 or walkers in the Weald.
