Lifeboat rescues former crew member

A FORMER volunteer crew member of the Newhaven lifeboat had to be rescued by his old colleagues when he got into trouble in Seaford Bay on Sunday.

Robin Deakin, of Brighton Road, Newhaven, was kite surfing when he became separated from his board.

He said: 'I was signaling to my fellow kite surfers when the Newhaven Lifeboat was called out.

'There was a fair bit of ribbing and it was a very jocular mood when they pulled me on to the boat.

'They managed to save my board which I was very grateful for as those things are quite expensive.'

Newhaven lifeboat had been in attendance at the Brighton Lifeboat open day when it was called at 2.30pm.

Despite his experience Mr Deakin was not injured and said it would not put him off the sport.

He said: 'I'll be out there again as soon as the wind is right.'
