Lighting up the town

THE Lewes Christmas lights will cut a half-a-mile swath of red and white from the Bottleneck to the end of Cliffe High Street when they are switched on this Sunday.

And they will brighten the town by night for seven weeks.

The lights have been renovated since last Christmas. There are new ropes of lights and brighter, uniform colours.

Large motifs will hang from 15 lamp posts from the Bottleneck to Cliffe Bridge, with six smaller ones along Cliffe High Street.

Shopkeepers are being urged to match them with the same red and white colours in their window displays and outside lighting, competing for a prize for best matching show.

'We are looking for a combined display so bright that any passing astronauts will clearly be able to see Lewes from space,' said Joanne Yates, president of Lewes Chamber of Commerce.

'In the past we have been criticised for being not very bright but this year we're going to shine through.'

Late night shopping in Lewes will be on December 5.

l The chamber is still seeking a volunteer Santa to preside at the town's late night shopping event.

Volunteers should call Kate Hook on 01273 475 266.
